This hand stamped batik fabric comes from Java, where the very best batik in the world is produced.
It is made for us at a small family workshop in the town of Jogyakarta where batik has been made for many generations.
The white cotton is first waxed using a copper stamp called a "cap" (pronounced "tjap"). The cotton is dyed blue, and the wax is removed in hot water to produce beautiful simple blue and white designs.
The batik is made on crisp, best quality cotton and is machine washable. Because of the final process, the dyes are very colour fast.
The fabric is approx 44 inches (110 cms.) wide, and is sold by the metre here. Its also available as a fat quarter set and as a sample set.
