Contemporary Batik Fabric - Deep Blue Nebula - Batik By The Metre

This beautiful cotton batik fabric features an abstract hatched design on a nebula-like background of blue and purple. The background is reminiscent of watercolour, while the lines of the batik create more structure to the pattern. This fabric is similar to cotton lawn and doesn't have much drape, making it perfect for quilting, shirts, blouses or childrenswear.

Often referred to as "Bali Batik", this top quality cotton batik comes from Central Java, the site of an old and thriving batik industry. We buy our modern batik fabric direct from the small scale manufacturing families who have lived in the "Batik District" for generations.

We've been privileged enough to spend many an hour in the workshops with the incredibly talented batik artists of Java, where the long lengths of cotton are dyed first with a variety of non-traditional techniques before wax is applied with copper stamps. A second layer of dye is applied on top, and then the wax is removed in very hot water.
